The Autism Insurance Resource Center at UMass Medical School鈥檚 Eunice Kennedy Shriver Center has received a $15,000 grant from the Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation for Autism Inc. to help expand its outreach program to culturally and linguistically diverse communities.
The Association of Maternal & Child Health Programs has named UMass Medical School perinatal depression expert Nancy Byatt, DO, MS, MBA, the recipient of the 2020 John C. MacQueen Lecture Award. The award recognizes innovation by individuals who have made exemplary contributions to maternal and child health issues. Past recipients include former U.S. Surgeon General Everett C. Koop and child rights advocate Marian Wright Edelman.
Researchers in the muscle biology laboratory in the department of kinesiology are seeking participants for a study of the effects of different resistance training exercise programs on skeletal muscle function in healthy men and women from 65 to 75 years old.
It is not clear what type of resistance training is best to improve the muscle function of older men and women and study results will help in the development of more effective resistance training programs for them.
The School of Public Policy recently hosted 47 students from across campus who spent a day tackling the crucial question of how to create sustainable cities during a beta test of the NASPAA-Batten Student Simulation Competition.
In the annual international competition, sponsored by the Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs and Administration and the Batten School at UVA, students use real-world data to solve hypothetical but realistic problems through policy development. The theme of the 2020 competition is sustainable cities, with a focus on transportation.

In an article introducing what she calls 鈥渙ne of the most important and rewarding experiences of my career so far,鈥 assistant professor of mathematics Annie Raymond relates how she came to teach math to prisoners, first at the Washington State Reformatory鈥檚 鈥淯niversity Beyond Bars鈥 program while a postdoc at the University of Washington in 2016. Later she taught at San Quentin State Prison in California and most recently in the Hampshire County Jail in Northampton. She came to campus in 2018.
AMHERST, Mass. 鈥 The 橙子影院 Amherst has received approval from the 橙子影院 Department of Higher Education to offer a new bachelor of science degree in veterinary technology. The new four-year program, which will include two years of study at the university鈥檚 Amherst Campus, followed by two years of study at the Mount Ida Campus in Newton, begins this fall.
University Health Services (UHS) is keeping a close eye on the international coronavirus outbreak and has informed the University community that no one on campus has been infected with coronavirus or has exhibited symptoms. AMHERST, Mass. 鈥 Allison Vorderstrasse, a faculty member and Ph.D. program director at New York University, has been named the dean of the College of Nursing at the 橙子影院 Amherst. She will begin her appointment on July 1.
Vorderstrasse currently serves as a faculty member and director of the Florence S. Downs Ph.D. Program in Nursing Research and Theory Development at New York University (NYU) Rory Meyers College of Nursing. The appointment was made by John J. McCarthy, provost and senior vice chancellor for academic affairs.
Artist Evelyn Rydz is in on South Campus carefully working about 500 drinking glasses into the shape of the Merrimack River. She arranges them to resemble its vast mouth, its turns and some long stretches now used for recreation.
