On July 30, NASA successfully launched its heaviest and most sophisticated Mars rover, named 鈥淧erseverance,鈥 from Cape Canaveral, Fla., aboard an Atlas V rocket. Among the thousands of people who鈥, Q. Perseverance will use a remote-sensing technique called laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, or LIBS, to study the chemical composition of the Martian surface. How does it work?, A., The rover鈥檚 SuperCam will analyze the surface composition by firing intense pulses of laser at distant rocks, boulders or sediments.
